Visiting The LBJ Presidential Library In Austin TX
The Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library is located on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas. According to President Johnson himself, during the dedication of the Library in 1971, “It is all here: the story of our time with the bark off…This library will show the facts, not just the joy and triumphs, but the sorrow and failures, too.”
It was and still is the mission of the library “to preserve and protect the historical materials in the collections of the library and make them readily accessible; to increase public awareness of the American experience through relevant exhibitions and educational programs; to advance the LBJ Library’s standing as a center for intellectual activity and community leadership while meeting the challenges of a changing world.”
The Library is home to tens of millions of documents, hundreds of thousands of photos, and thousands of hours of recordings, all chronicling President Johnson’s time as President and the rest of his political life.
The Library is also a museum that houses a wide variety of mementos donated by the Johnson family and other citizens. They have antiques, Oval Office furniture, photos, kids’ drawings, and so much more. The most notable part of the museum is the collection of personal belongings of the President and the First Lady. It includes clothes, trinkets, and furniture used during their time in the White House.
