Zilker Metropolitan Park covers 351 acres. The Park is home to many facilities, recreational opportunities, and special events ideal for families and individuals.

Brief History

Zilker Metropolitan Park is Austin TX’s first every metropolitan Park. The Park derives its name from Andrew Jackson Zilker – a renowned politician and businessman who donated the land where the Park sits on.

Zilker Park is known as the crown jewel of the Austin parks system. The Park is located on 2100-Barton Springs Road. Andrew Jackson Zilker donated parcels of land to the city starting in 1917. In three separate occasions, Mr. Zilker gave out his ranch, which included Barton Springs, to the city. He gave out land in 1918, 1923, 1931, and 1934. The Metropolitan Park was officially named in 1934.

Zilker Metropolitan Park Today

Zilker Park is a recreational hub with major activities and amenities, including Zilker Botanical Garden, Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Clubhouse, Austin Nature & Science Center, Sunshine Camp, and Zilker Hillside Theater, Girl Scout Lodge, Umlauf Sculpture Gardens, McBeth Recreational Center, among other amenities. The Park hosts popular events like Austin City Limits and Zilker Park Kite festivals today and attracts both local and international tourists.

Zilker Park has three picnic sites, one shelter, a disc golf course, and volleyball courts. Amenities like the Zilker Club house are open for rental. The science center offers many fun programs for adults and children. The pool is fed by spring water throughout the year. The botanical gardens include Austin Area Garden and Taniguchi Oriental Garden.

Zilker Metropolitan Park’s theatre hosts a variety of concerts ranging from Jazz to Country. The theatre also hosts Shakespeare in the Park and the popular Zilker Summer Musical. There’s countless things to do in Zikler Metropolitan Park regardless of a person’s personal tastes and preferences.
