St. Johns All You Need To Know

St. Johns is a neighborhood hugging Interstate 35 in north Austin. It is named for Saint Johns Avenue. That road runs through the neighborhood of St. Johns and under Highway 35 into Highland. St. John’s Avenue goes all the way to Midtown Commons at Crestview Station.

Highway 183 is its northern border. Highway 290 or Manor Expressway is its southern border. Highway 290 discharges into West Koenig Lane several blocks west and feeds into the Highland neighborhood. Cameron Road is its eastern border. The western edge of the neighborhood zig-zags along residential streets, going around the Highland campus of Austin Community college and including part of Highland Mall.

The community is a fifteen to twenty minute drive from downtown Austin. It is a ten minute drive to the LBJ Early College High School or the Big Walnut Creek Nature Preserve. The Northeast Early College High School is located on Berkman Drive on the other side of Cameron Road. This is next to Nelson Field. The area east of Cameron is also home to the Austin Achieve Elementary School and another Austin Achieve campus. The Clifton Career Development School is located on Coronado Drive. That meets with Cameron Road, and it is in biking distance of the St. Johns public library.

Residents are generally assigned to Reilly, Brown, Winn or Pickle Elementary school. They generally go to Webb Middle School. Webb Middle School on Saint Johns Avenue has a score of two out of ten from Great Schools. Students may go to Reagan High School, Lanier High School or Maccullum High School. Residents are in easy reach of Victory Christian Center School, a private Protestant K-212 school.

The area has a mix of single family homes and apartments, but the neighborhood also contains a number of hotels, mostly along Interstate 35. This is a densely populated neighborhood. It has between nine and ten thousand permanent residents. Homes range in price from 200K to 1.5 million. The area has seen a wave of new, high density construction. That’s why you can find 1500 square foot condos built since 2019 for half a million dollars.

It has an average walk score of 46. The most walkable areas are along the periphery, since the busy thoroughfares have the most restaurants and retail. It has a better than average bike score of 61.

The Social Security Administration office is in southern St. Johns. Pickle Elementary School is at the north end of the neighborhood. The St. John Branch of the Austin public library is here. There is only one small park here, St. John Park. It is next to Black’s Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.

St. John’s residents are about a mile from North Austin Pony Field and the North Austin Optimist ball field. That is in Crestview.

Heritage Hills is north of the highway. That is home of the massive Gustavo L. Garcia District Park, also known as the Gus Garcia Park. Dobie College Prep Academy is north of the park and on the other side of Rundberg Lane.
