We are a small law firm in Austin, Texas, with a thriving immigration practice. We help bring peace to immigrant families. Our clients are going through one of the most important processes of their lives. The legal help we provide not only has an effect on the lives of our clients, but also on the lives of their children and grandchildren.

We are seeking a Senior Associate to be the managing attorney of a robust caseload, supervise the legal team, and work with the Owner and Firm Administrator to ensure cases progress through the pipeline. You will not be responsible for networking or bringing in new clients, but you will be responsible for making sure that the legal team is productive. If you want a job that allows you to focus on practicing law rather than running a law firm, this may be a fit for you. You must be an experienced and knowledgeable lawyer ready to supervise an immigration caseload of family based, removal defense, and humanitarian cases.

We are considering applicants from all over the United States, and we are committed to making an investment in finding the right person for the position. The person we hire will also be making a pretty big investment in their future and in us, especially if we move you across the country to join our team. Therefore, we think it is fair – and important – to lay it out, up front, to you what type of person we are looking for and what we expect from you.

As a precursor to scheduling an in-person interview, we invite you to learn more about the type of person we are looking for and the type of firm culture we are building. If you are interested, follow the instructions at the end to send us your resume.

What are some of the characteristics that any member of our team must have?

You must be a positive person. If you see the glass half full, you are the type of person we are looking for. We have a zero-tolerance policy for toxic people and workplace drama. Our team is outstanding and does amazing work. We do not do well with negative attitudes, complainers, or victims, and you definitely will not fit in if you even think that you may fit into one of the above categories of negative people. “That’s not my job” is not a phrase that exists in our office. We have a supportive team culture and fitting into this culture is the primary job requirement.

We need people who are not afraid of computers or learning new things that will make their jobs easier. You must be proficient with Word, Google Drive, electronic legal research, and basic case management. Also, we’re looking for someone who not only “follows” policies and procedures, but also embraces them and is thankful they exist because they allow us to provide more quality legal services efficiently. You must enjoy developing and implementing systems and continually improving them.

We need high energy and enthusiasm for the work we do (and life in general). You must be able to work fast and change gears quickly. You must be able to think on your feet and make smart decisions.

You also need to be detail-oriented. We help a lot of people. Working fast is no excuse for careless mistakes. No one’s life should be negatively impacted because our firm didn’t meet a deadline or made an avoidable error or oversight. It can’t happen.

You must be willing to go the extra mile to get the job done right the first time. In our practice getting it done right the first time for our clients is very important and we need everyone to work with this goal in mind.

You must, must, must have emotional intelligence and empathy. You must have compassion for our clients and for humankind. You cannot be someone who does not take criticism well or cannot deal well with people. Some of our clients have bad days, can be royal pains, and do not always make good life choices. They are dealing with a complex and confusing legal system – on top of everything they encounter in their daily lives. Sometimes they take it out on their lawyer. If you do not think that you are up to the challenge of helping sometimes difficult clients, this is not the job for you.

You must be a team player. You will be supervising a dynamic group of people that make up our legal team. Our team is growing, and you will be instrumental in that growth. We need a Director of Legal Services who is an outstanding legal technician, and an excellent leader and supervisor. We are strong believers in the team approach and our office is a team environment, so if you are not a team player, this is not the job for you. You must enjoy mentoring and teaching if you are to succeed in this role.

If you think your juris doctorate and years of work experience mean that you are too good or valuable or important to make coffee, stuff envelopes, or scan your own documents, this is absolutely, positively not the job for you.

To put it simply, we want you to do good work and lead our team to rally around our clients to help solve their legal problems. We want people who want to fight for immigrants’ rights.

You do not need to worry about the business of running a law firm in this position. It is not your responsibility to bring in new clients. If you don’t want to spend your time networking or running a business and are looking for a position that lets you focus on the law and managing a team of support staff, this may be the perfect position for you.

If you are hired, you will be part of a wonderful team of people who work hard to get the job done right the first time and take pride in the work that they do. You will be part of a team that is rewarded for their hard work.

With regard to compensation, it is negotiable based upon experience and is subject to review after 180 days. We are willing to pay the right person a higher-than-market salary and pay to move you across the country to come work here. This position is an investment in the lives of our clients and the future of our firm. The compensation package plan that gives you some control over what you can earn working for our firm. If we succeed, you will too!

Is this going to be an easy job? No. It might be one of the biggest challenges of your life. But, it is our belief that anything really great is worth working for, and that our greatest growth comes from our biggest challenges. You will be challenged. You will have fun. You will be compensated. And you will help our clients.

If you have gotten this far and are thinking about applying, it means that you are ready for a challenge and want to be part of a team that helps people and rewards good work.
