Explore East Austin

Old West Austin is the oldest part of the city. That's why it is classified as a historic neighborhood. But what about eastern Austin? East Austin has traditionally been a working-class area. It features small starter homes but few HOAs.

Neighborhoods in eastern Austin include East Cesar Chavez, Holly, Govalle, Johnston Terrace, MLK, Rosewood, Chestnut, Central East Austin, and Upper Boggy Creek. The MLK area may be split into ML and East MLK, but there is only East Cesar Chavez. East of that is Holly. South of that is the Colorado River and Riverside.

Some people include Mueller on that list. The neighborhood of Mueller is located on the site of what was the Mueller Airport.

Eastern Austin is separated from Central Austin by Interstate 35. Everything north of Highway 290 and/or Highway 183 is considered to be part of North Austin. Yet the name North Loop refers to an area just south of East Highway 290.

Eastview is a commonly used moniker in East Austin. For example, the Austin Community College Eastview Campus is located in east Austin. So is the Eastview Health Sciences School. Both of these schools and the Austin Can Academy are in Gaudalupe-Saladana.

The Eastview Admissions and Records building is next to Eastside Memorial Early College High School.

East Austin as a whole received a walk score of 67. That's the result of its high density, mostly because it was built up before every household has as many cars as adults.

However, it is car-friendly, and you need a car to run some errands. The areas dominated by single-family homes have mediocre walk scores and public transit scores.

But the area is zoned mixed-used, so you can find shopping, restaurants, and doctor's offices within a mile or two of your home. That's why the area received a bike score of 95 out of 100.

It also gets points for the massive network of biking and hiking trails in the Boggy Creek Greenbelt and Rosewood Neighborhood Park. Residents are also able to bike or walk to the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, Catherine Lamkin Arboretum, and Yellow Jacket Stadium. There are parks near every public school.

For example, Oak Springs School Park is next to Oak Springs Elementary School. There is a modest park beside Govalle Elementary School, though the Govalle Neighborhood Park is much larger. The Govalle Neighborhood Park is connected by trails to the East Boggle Creek Greenbelt and the solar farm at the end of Lott Avenue. The Ortega School Park is next to Ortega Elementary School. Givens District Park runs along Springdale Road.

It has a public transit score of 50. There are bus routes along major streets like Springdale Road, East Twelfth Street, Airport Boulevard, Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Manor Road and Oak Springs Drive. East Austin is a ten minute drive or twenty minute bus ride from downtown Austin.

Areas like Pleasant Valley and the neighborhoods around St. Edward's University are generally considered to be in south Austin. But you may hear about Riverside and East Riverside or East Congress and West Congress. (There is a South Congress, too.)
