Coronado Hills All You Need To Know

Coronado Hills is a triangular neighborhood in north Austin. It is squarely inside of Travis County and the Austin Independent School District. Coronado Hills is wedged between Highway 183 and Highway 290.

Cameron Road is the western border of the neighborhood. The neighborhood has higher than average crime rates, and not all of this is due to its proximity to the highways. For example, the crime rate is higher at hotels and the Highland Mall due to the constant traffic.

Niche.com gave it a C plus on crime and safety, but it was given a D plus on housing costs.

The median home cost around 260,000 dollars. That's almost half what you'd pay for the average Austin home. But these tend to be older condos and a few aging single family homes. Two thirds of residents rent. The housing score was rather low in part because rents are high relative to the median local income.

The median household income in Coronado Hills is 37,000 dollars a year, while the national average is 62,000 dollars. That makes the 1000 to 1500 dollar a month rents barely manageable by locals.

The only park in the area is Nelson Field. That is next to Northeast Early College High School. This multiuse field may host high school or college level events.

The Austin Achieve Elementary School is located at the eastern end of the neighborhood. Pickle Elementary School is located in neighboring St. Johns, as is the St. John branch of the Austin public library.

This area is only four miles from downtown. But its population is smaller than similar communities due to its compact size. There are roughly three thousand residents. It is part of the 78752 zip code.

On the other hand, this area is not very walkable. You can walk to the few schools in the area, but there isn't much in terms of retail or service providers. Residents may or may not feel like that's a good trade off, unless you want to ride your bike to the Art Alliance Austin building in Windsor Park.

That can be reached by taking Berkman Drive south several blocks.

There are quite a few college students here. The neighborhood is a ten minute or less trip from the Austin Community College campus in Highland.

It is just as close to the Texas DPS training academy in Highland off Koenig. It is a twenty minute trip to the University of Texas at Austin campus in downtown.

The neighborhoods of Berkley Square - Headway are north of the neighborhood as is the Walnut Creek Business Park. Walnut Bend is almost directly across from Coronado Hills, though that would require crossing the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 183.

That is where you'll find the Big Walnut Creek Nature Preserve and LBJ Early College High School. University Hills is south of Coronado Hills and on the south side of Highway 290.

It can be reached by taking Berkman Drive, since that crosses under Highway 290. That also takes you near the Austin Creative Reuse Center, Texas Empowerment Academy, and Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy. These are located in the Windsor Park / University Hills area.

If residents take Cameron Road South, they'll reach a large retail center bounded by Reinli Street and Cameron Road. That backs up onto Interstate 35, also known as the Purple Heart Highway.

Taking Berkman South brings you to the massive Bartholomew Park. It has playgrounds, walking trails, ballfields and a roller derby track. That is next door to the Combined Transportation, Emergency, and Communications Center.
