Central Austin In Brief

Central Austin is north of downtown Austin. It is also north of the Texas Capitol area. It is generally considered to surround but not include the University of Texas at Austin Campus.

This means that the central area includes the North University neighborhood but not the university. It includes West Campus and the western half of The Drag along Guadalupe Street.

The dividing line between central Austin and downtown Austin is West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Downtown is south of that, while the Medical District is south of UT Austin.

Ironically, the area just south of the central area is Northside, while the West End is directly south of it. These neighborhoods get their name from their location relative to the Capitol building.

Lamar Boulevard separates this centrally located neighborhood from Old West Austin. The Mopac Expressway is west of Old West Austin. Interstate 35 separates it from East Austin. That means that the Dell Children's Medical Center and Mueller Lake Park are outside of it.

The central neighborhood is considered to be everything north of UT Austin and south of 38th Street, though this means the border follows the edge of the campus.

This means that it includes the Seminary of the Southwest and Upbring School of Arts and Sciences. While the Medical District is south of the central neighborhoods, St. David's Medical Center is located here.

Dean Keeton Street is the boundary between Central and the UT Austin Campus for the last few blocks on the approach to I-35. This puts the LBJ Presidential Library outside of Central Austin.

The border between Central Austin and UT Austin turns north along San Jacinto. This puts Eastwoods Neighborhood Park with its splash pad and tennis courts in the central district, though the engineering buildings two blocks west are not. The area directly north of the university is full of apartments and condominiums.

The border follows West 27th before turning south on Guadalupe. It then turns west to follow MLK Boulevard. This puts several university coops and student housing facilities outside of the University grounds.

This area has a few parks. The largest of these is the Hancock Park. That is also the home of the Hancock Recreation Center. Hemphill Park surrounds Kirby Hall Park.

The long narrow section that stretches along East Drive is sometimes called Hemphill Park while the playgrounds next to Kirby Hall School are called Adams-Hemphill Neighborhood Park. There are small parks like Sparky Pocket Park.

Residents are close to the parks in Hyde Park. That contains the Shipe Neighborhood Park. This is next to the Elisabet Ney Museum. That has an outdoor sculpture garden you can see from the park.

And it is walking distance of homes in northern Hancock. The Caswell Tennis Center is considered to be in part of central Austin, though it borders the Shoal Creek parks that are part of Old West Austin and the Clarksville Neighborhood.

This mature neighborhood has several private schools. One is Hyde Park School associated with Hyde Park Baptist Church.

The Heritage area is considered to be part of Central Austin, though Triangle State is not. This puts Ascension Seton Medical Center and medical facilities along Guadalupe Street outside of the area.
